Stabilising is not just about buying an accessory, it is about deciding how movement tells something. On our business video shoots, we never reach for the same tool for a CEO portrait, a workshop walk-through and a car shot. Here are the techniques we use, each with its strengths, limits and our own view. it. A slider is a short rail along which the camera slides, mounted on feet or a tripod. It is used for detail shots, packshots, interviews where a gentle move is wanted, or a slow reveal. Motorised, it gives constant speed, which is also useful for timelapse.

Limits. The travel is short and the movement strictly linear. It needs very stable, well levelled support, otherwise vibration goes straight into the picture. With a heavy camera, rail flex becomes a real issue.

Our take. A discreet move that adds depth to static shots. We use it sparingly: a movement should always have a reason, otherwise it distracts.

Dolly track: the long, smooth move

When to use it. A dolly is a cart rolling on levelled rails. It allows long, very regular lateral or push-in moves, whether for a polished interview, a set or a drama scene. It is the cinema classic, and it still is.

Limits. It needs setup time, space and perfectly levelled track, with wedges on uneven ground. Movement is limited to the line of the track, and the crew must be large enough to move it and push it smoothly.

Our take. For a slow, clean tracking shot it is hard to beat. When time is short we switch to a slider; when the scene is looser, to a gimbal.

Crane and jib: rise, drop, swing in an arc

<defs><marker id="f5en_a" viewBox="0 0 10 10" refX="8" refY="5" markerWidth="7" markerHeight="7" orient="auto"></marker></defs><rect width="640" height="300" fill="#161817"/><line x1="40" y1="285" x2="600" y2="285" stroke="#4a4f4c" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" /><line x1="300" y1="170" x2="250" y2="280" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="5" stroke-linecap="round" /><line x1="300" y1="170" x2="350" y2="280" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="5" stroke-linecap="round" /><line x1="300" y1="170" x2="300" y2="280" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="5" stroke-linecap="round" /><line x1="140" y1="205" x2="520" y2="120" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="7" stroke-linecap="round" /><rect x="110" y="195" width="40" height="36" rx="3" fill="#4a4f4c" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="2"/><circle cx="300" cy="170" r="9" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><rect x="505" y="95" width="56" height="34" rx="3" fill="#1f2221" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="2"/><rect x="561" y="105" width="14" height="14" rx="2" fill="#f2f0eb" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="0"/><text x="620" y="245" text-anchor="end" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="13" font-weight="400" fill="#ffd400">Arc movement</text><text x="130" y="258" text-anchor="middle" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="13" font-weight="400" fill="#9aa09d">Counterweight</text><line x1="298" y1="168" x2="258" y2="140" stroke="#9aa09d" stroke-width="1.5" stroke-linecap="round" /><text x="252" y="138" text-anchor="end" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="13" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Pivot</text><text x="533" y="84" text-anchor="middle" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="13" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Camera</text>
Counterweight, pivot, arm: a crane moves the camera in arcs and in height.

When to use it. A jib is a long arm on a pivot, with the camera at one end and a counterweight at the other. We plan several cups (redundancy), safety cables tied to a solid point on the vehicle, a load below the manufacturer’s rating and a clean, smooth body surface.

For big outdoor moves, a drone can advantageously replace a crane.

Car suction cups: shooting from the vehicle, safely

<defs><marker id="f6en_a" viewBox="0 0 10 10" refX="8" refY="5" markerWidth="7" markerHeight="7" orient="auto"></marker></defs><rect width="640" height="300" fill="#161817"/><line x1="40" y1="265" x2="600" y2="265" stroke="#4a4f4c" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" /><rect x="100" y="170" width="420" height="60" rx="14" fill="#4a4f4c"/><polygon points="190,170 235,125 370,125 415,170" fill="#4a4f4c"/><polygon points="205,168 242,134 300,134 300,168" fill="#1f2221"/><polygon points="312,168 312,134 366,134 400,168" fill="#1f2221"/><circle cx="180" cy="235" r="28" fill="#161817" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="440" cy="235" r="28" fill="#161817" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="4"/><rect x="430" y="150" width="80" height="8" rx="2" fill="#f2f0eb" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="0"/><ellipse cx="445" cy="165" rx="9" ry="5" fill="#ffd400"/><ellipse cx="470" cy="165" rx="9" ry="5" fill="#ffd400"/><ellipse cx="495" cy="165" rx="9" ry="5" fill="#ffd400"/><rect x="440" y="112" width="46" height="34" rx="3" fill="#1f2221" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="2"/><rect x="486" y="122" width="14" height="14" rx="2" fill="#f2f0eb" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="0"/><circle cx="405" cy="205" r="5" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><rect x="40" y="38" width="14" height="14" rx="2" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><text x="66" y="50" text-anchor="start" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="15" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Redundant suction cups</text><rect x="40" y="70" width="14" height="14" rx="2" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><text x="66" y="82" text-anchor="start" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="15" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Safety cable</text><rect x="40" y="102" width="14" height="14" rx="2" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><text x="66" y="114" text-anchor="start" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="15" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Limited speed</text>
Car mount: redundancy, safety cables and controlled speed.

When to use it. Professional suction mounts let you fix a camera to the bonnet, a door or the windscreen for in-vehicle shots: speed, scenery rushing by, passengers seen from outside. The viewpoint is impossible to get any other way.

Limits. Safety comes before the shot. We plan several cups (redundancy), safety cables tied to a solid point on the vehicle, a load below the manufacturer's rating and a clean, smooth body surface. Speed stays limited, we follow the equipment's guidelines and, ideally, we shoot on a closed or authorised road. Every mount is checked before every take.

Our take. A car shot is prepared: tests at standstill, then at low speed, before building up. If we have to choose, we give up the shot rather than accept a risk.

Shoulder rig: the reportage reflex

When to use it. A shoulder rig rests the camera on the shoulder with a handgrip at the front. Three contact points (shoulder, hand, face) stabilise the whole. It is used in reportage, mobile interviews, wherever you must react quickly and stay discreet.

Limits. It does not erase walking jolts and shoulder height fixes the viewpoint. Fatigue builds on long takes, especially with a heavy camera, and the operator must learn to breathe calmly.

Our take. A solid base for the field, light to deploy. It gains real value when combined with good walking technique, or with a saddle for long takes.

Handheld: technique, and style

<defs><marker id="f7en_a" viewBox="0 0 10 10" refX="8" refY="5" markerWidth="7" markerHeight="7" orient="auto"></marker></defs><rect width="640" height="300" fill="#161817"/><line x1="40" y1="268" x2="600" y2="268" stroke="#4a4f4c" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" /><circle cx="250" cy="70" r="17" fill="#f2f0eb" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="0"/><polyline points="250,92 245,170" fill="none" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="10" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"/><polyline points="245,170 272,212 255,265" fill="none" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="8" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"/><polyline points="245,170 235,215 215,262" fill="none" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="8" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"/><polyline points="250,105 262,140 305,125" fill="none" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="6" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"/><rect x="300" y="105" width="55" height="34" rx="3" fill="#1f2221" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="2"/><rect x="355" y="115" width="14" height="14" rx="2" fill="#f2f0eb" stroke="#f2f0eb" stroke-width="0"/><circle cx="262" cy="140" r="6" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><circle cx="272" cy="212" r="6" fill="#ffd400" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="0"/><line x1="150" y1="72" x2="232" y2="70" stroke="#9aa09d" stroke-width="1.5" stroke-linecap="round" /><text x="40" y="76" text-anchor="start" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="14" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Slow breathing</text><line x1="190" y1="147" x2="256" y2="140" stroke="#9aa09d" stroke-width="1.5" stroke-linecap="round" /><text x="40" y="152" text-anchor="start" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="14" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Elbows in</text><line x1="150" y1="215" x2="236" y2="215" stroke="#9aa09d" stroke-width="1.5" stroke-linecap="round" /><text x="40" y="220" text-anchor="start" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="14" font-weight="400" fill="#f2f0eb">Bent knees</text><ellipse cx="400" cy="262" rx="20" ry="7" fill="#4a4f4c"/><ellipse cx="470" cy="262" rx="20" ry="7" fill="#4a4f4c"/><ellipse cx="540" cy="262" rx="20" ry="7" fill="#ffd400"/><text x="480" y="212" text-anchor="middle" font-family="Inter,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" font-size="14" font-weight="700" fill="#f2f0eb">Ninja walk: soft steps</text>
Handheld is all in the body: knees, elbows, breathing, steps.

When to use it. Handheld is the fastest way to be reactive, and a genuine directing choice: urgency, proximity, a feeling of truth. The basics: breathe calmly and exhale during the take, bend your knees, keep your elbows close to the body and use a strap to share the weight. For walking, the "ninja walk" means moving with bent knees, rolling the foot to absorb each step.

Limits. The result depends entirely on the operator and the focal length: the longer the lens, the more shake shows. A long take is tiring, and a handheld shot that is too nervous can distract from the message.

Our take. We shoot handheld when energy or closeness serves the subject, never by default.
