Moving in draws attention and enters the subject’s intimacy; moving out reveals context or isolates the character. Do not confuse it with a zoom: a zoom changes the focal length from a fixed position, whereas a dolly changes the relationship between foreground and background (parallax). Combining a dolly in with a zoom out, or the reverse, gives the dolly zoom, famous for its vertigo effect.

The tracking shot

<rect width="640" height="240" fill="#161817"/><text x="20" y="30" font-size="15" font-weight="700" fill="#ffd400">Tracking shot</text><g fill="#4a4f4c"><circle cx="90" cy="70" r="16"/><rect x="86" y="84" width="8" height="26"/></g><g fill="#4a4f4c"><circle cx="230" cy="70" r="16"/><rect x="226" y="84" width="8" height="26"/></g><g fill="#4a4f4c"><circle cx="370" cy="70" r="16"/><rect x="366" y="84" width="8" height="26"/></g><g fill="#4a4f4c"><circle cx="510" cy="70" r="16"/><rect x="506" y="84" width="8" height="26"/></g><rect x="60" y="214" width="520" height="3" fill="#4a4f4c"/><g><g><polygon points="0,0 -75,-130 75,-130" fill="#ffd400" fill-opacity=".26" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="1.5"/><rect x="-9" y="-12" width="18" height="24" rx="3" fill="#f2f0eb"/><polygon points="-6,-12 -11,-22 11,-22 6,-12" fill="#f2f0eb"/></g><animateTransform attributeName="transform" type="translate" values="110 200;530 200;110 200" dur="7s" repeatCount="indefinite"/></g>
Tracking shot: the camera glides sideways and the scenery passes with parallax.

The camera moves parallel to the subject: it accompanies a person walking or runs alongside a set.
