Short, vertical formats have taken over most social networks. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and even LinkedIn promote these smartphone-first videos. For a company, it’s a fantastic opportunity to reach new audiences, provided you follow a few rules.
Think vertical from the shoot
Reframing a horizontal video as vertical often loses most of the image. It’s better to plan for it from the shoot: either by filming specifically in vertical, or by framing wide so both formats can be produced without sacrificing the subject.
The first three seconds are decisive
On social networks, users decide almost instantly whether to keep watching. Start with what is strongest: a gesture, a result, a question, a camera movement. Introductions and logos can wait until the end.
Always add subtitles
A large share of social media videos are watched without sound, on public transport, at the office or in a waiting room. Subtitles are no longer optional: they let people understand the message even on mute, and make your content more accessible.
Adapt the length and tone to each platform
- Instagram: short, polished, fast-paced formats that enhance your brand image;
- TikTok: a more spontaneous tone, behind the scenes, humour and trends;
- LinkedIn: more informative content: expertise, projects, teams, recruitment;
- YouTube Shorts: a good way to point viewers to longer videos.
Show the behind the scenes
“Behind the scenes” content works particularly well: how a product is made, preparing an event, a typical day at the company. It’s authentic, easy to produce in batches and creates closeness with your community.
Publish regularly
On social media, consistency matters as much as quality. It’s better to publish a short video every week than an ambitious film twice a year. That’s the whole point of producing in batches: a well-organised shooting day can provide many short formats to release over several weeks.
A good short format isn’t just a randomly cut excerpt: it’s planned from the shoot.
At that dog, we build social media variations into the preparation of every project, so that each shoot feeds your channels over the long term.
