An AI can produce a beautiful image in seconds. So why pay a photographer? The answer fits in one sentence: a client does not buy an image, they buy a result someone answers for. Here, from the point of view of a studio that photographs and films every week, is what hides behind the service. It is an analysis, not a comparative test.
What AI does well
It quickly generates plausible visuals, explores directions, produces mock-ups and moods. For a graphic intention or a moodboard it is a precious tool, and we say so openly.
What the client buys on top of the image
- Understanding the brief. A company request is rarely complete: it has to be reformulated, questioned, prioritised.
- Directing people. An executive, an employee, a craftsperson do not pose naturally: putting people at ease is a skill.
- Real light. Working with a place, a window, a product, a skin, as they actually exist.
- The atmosphere on set. What makes a team relaxed or tense shows in the picture.
- Anticipating constraints. Formats, versions, brand guidelines, rights, release schedule.
- Accountability. If the image is a problem, someone answers, fixes and owns it.
A “real” photo and a generated image do not say the same thing
A portrait of your team, a photo of your site or of your actual product: their value comes from being true. A generated image can illustrate an idea; it cannot bear witness to a place, a product or a person that exists. For employer branding, reportage or faithful packshots, proof matters.
The profession is shifting
The profession may slide from “producing an image” to “designing the image”: defining the intention, directing, choosing, finishing. This is an evolution we observe, not a certainty. Those who adapt will be those who can explain what they bring.
